PURPOSE
The MACS Elementary Invitational Fine Arts Festival is designed to give elementary students an opportunity to begin to develop fine arts skills that can be used in future ministry. The festival will provide insight from qualified judges to help young people improve their abilities in the fields of music, speech, and art. The festival will be non-competitive, with students performing for the purpose of ratings and feedback from the judges. Our goal for this festival is to glorify Christ by helping elementary young people develop their God-given talents.
GUIDELINES
All participants must use the Elementary Manual for the current year. The manual is available online here and at the Bethany Christian School website, www.bcstroy.org. This manual will be the authority for dress, conduct, and contest guidelines. Any exceptions will be determined by the contest coordinator.
PARTICIPANTS
This competition is open to students in grades 4-6 who attend a school participating in MACS. Students who attend churches with an affiliated MACS school or who study privately with a teacher in a MACS school are also welcome to participate.
CHAPERONES AND ATTENDANCE
Every school must have one chaperone for every five students in attendance. We request that these sponsors be responsible for their students throughout the day. There is no fee for sponsors to attend. Students are expected to arrive 45 minutes before their event is scheduled. There is no opening or closing program at this event.
CATEGORIES AVAILABLE
The following general categories are available for this Festival:
Instrumental solo/ensemble: standard orchestral instruments, harp, guitar, and recorder
Piano solo/ensemble
Vocal solo/ensemble
Speech: oral reading, poetry recitation, Scripture recitation
Art: drawing, painting, photography, craft, sculpture, printmaking, calligraphy
For more specifics about these categories, please consult the manual.
SCHEDULE
The festival is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. and finish by 3:30 p.m. The schedule of the days events will be available online several days before the festival. Students are not required to attend for the entire day, but must arrive 45 minutes before their first scheduled event. After a student has completed all scheduled events and received his evaluation, he is free to leave with an adult.
AWARDS
All students will be given a rating of I (Superior), II (Good), or III (Participant), and will be given a ribbon corresponding to their rating. This is not an event where students compete against one another, but rather strive to perform to the best of their own abilities. The judges’ expectations will be based on an understanding of the capabilities of young performers. Wherever possible, judges will also give an oral critique, including encouragement and suggestions about improvement. At the discretion of the art judges, some “Best in Show” ribbons may also be awarded.
MUSIC
All music must be in keeping with the guidelines as set forth in the Elementary Manual. There is no official music check for this event. However, if you are unsure of any piece of music, please contact us and we will check it for you. Any music performed that day that is not in keeping with our music guidelines will result in the student being unable to receive a rating or ribbon for the event.
MEALS
Students and sponsors may pre-purchase a lunch for $4.00 with your registration, or for $4.50 on the day of the event. The menu will be released with the registration information.
FEES
The fee per student will be $5 for each individual event or $2 for each member of a group. A school registration fee is broken down as follows:
1-30 student participants $30
31-60 student participants $60
Non-MACS organization $60
